General Anesthesia for Breast Surgery: Is It Safe with Low Blood Pressure or Low Body Weight? — Advice from an International Medical Journal
Hello — we are U&U Plastic Surgery, a clinic devoted exclusively to breast surgery.

- patients with many family members who have low blood pressure
- those who are underweight and often feel symptoms of low blood pressure
- those whose low-blood-pressure symptoms worsen noticeably during their period
If any of these describe you, this article is probably for you.
If you often feel dizzy standing up, you may worry it will be hard to wake up after general anesthesia.
So we would like to give you two pieces of information.
1) Is it true that waking from anesthesia also takes relatively longer?
2) With low blood pressure, can my blood pressure drop suddenly under anesthesia?

This information comes from a clinic that performed over 3000 breast augmentations last year, so please read closely.

1. Is it true that waking from anesthesia also takes relatively longer?
Source
Relatively speaking, recovery does often take longer.
The drugs used for anesthesia themselves generally act to lower blood pressure. So in patients with pre-existing low blood pressure, drops in blood pressure during surgery happen readily.
However, this situation does not lead to serious complications or adverse effects.
On this point, let us introduce 1 research study.

General anesthesia for breast surgery
It is a paper from an international cardiovascular medicine journal, based on data from 4776 patients.
The study was conducted to determine how much intra-operative hypotension under general anesthesia affects the speed of recovery from anesthesia.
Some of the patients had blood pressure that stayed low for more than 10 minutes. Accordingly, full emergence from anesthesia also took on average about 10-15 minutes longer.
Reassuringly, the study reports no serious after-effects or complications.
It does mention that some patients experienced a slightly lower body temperature, or symptoms of nausea and dizziness.
These mild symptoms resolved with time — but they are exactly why post-operative monitoring by an anesthesiologist is essential.

2. With low blood pressure, can my blood pressure
drop suddenly under anesthesia?
Source
As mentioned above, blood pressure can indeed drop during surgery.
If you already have low blood pressure, you may worry that even an expected intra-operative drop could turn into an accident.
But in the actual operating room, the surgeon is not alone — an anesthesiologist monitors you as well.
Moreover, the anesthesiologist enters the operating room having already anticipated, before surgery, that your blood pressure may drop further.
Anesthetic drugs can be adjusted in real time whenever needed, so please do not worry too much.

But there is 1 thing you must know.
General anesthesia for breast surgery
You should not choose a plastic surgery clinic on the words 'we have an anesthesiologist in-house' alone.
An anesthesiologist can be present at a clinic in 2 forms:
- staying briefly as a freelancer
- working in-house full-time
Naturally, a full-time in-house anesthesiologist contributes more to the safety of your surgery.
On this point, we attach a column on choosing a plastic surgery clinic with anesthesia as the yardstick.
