Breast Feel After Surgery and How Scarring Changes It? Facts Proven in the Research
Hello — we are U&U Plastic Surgery, founded on over 20 years of breast surgery research.

This article was not written simply to promote our clinic.
We wrote it to provide medical information on scarring — a factor that shapes how the breast feels after augmentation.
Some of you may believe that feel is dictated by the implant type — Motiva, Mentor, and so on.
But whatever implant you choose,
the post-surgery feel is
the feel of your own tissue covering the implant.
Source
In other words, the body tissue covering the implant can influence the feel even more.
Specifically, the skin, subcutaneous tissue, capsule, and so on shape the feel over time.

That is why a scar should not be seen
as merely a 'red mark.'

Inside the scar, the tissue beneath the skin is healing. A process of re-weaving the skin's internal structure is under way, together with a protein called collagen.
But when collagen accumulates excessively or chaotically, the tissue under the skin hardens.
( * This state is called 'fibrosis.' )
And when the tissue of your own that covers the implant hardens, the feel of the augmented breast can naturally turn firm as well.

About 10 years ago, our breast surgeons appeared on the TV program 'Let Me In'
So if I get good scar care
after the surgery,
does that mean the feel will be fine too?
Source
The collagen alignment within a scar and the pliability of the skin layers are referred to as 'scar quality.'
And scar quality is mostly determined not by 'aftercare' but during the 'surgery itself.'
- the direction of the skin incision
- the depth and force of tissue dissection
- preservation of blood vessels and nerves
- minimization of bleeding, and so on..
Scar quality is set by factors like these, all tied to tissue trauma during surgery.
This has already been demonstrated in numerous studies.

So when considering surgery,
look at the surgeon's skill, of course — but also ask, 'how healthily can my tissue inside the scar recover?'
Rather than comparing feel reviews by implant brand, we hope you will focus more on how delicately your tissue will be handled during surgery.
The implant sits either above or below the muscle within the breast.
If it goes under the muscle, the muscle must also be incised, meaning more tissue trauma and bleeding.
Put differently, there is a greater risk that the tissue within the scar becomes firmer.
That does not mean every implant surgery goes above the muscle.
We cover this in detail in the columns below — please have a look.
