Over the years, we have met countless people considering breast augmentation.
Among them, there are questions we hear most often.
“How severe is the pain after surgery?”
“How many days off work will I need?”
“Is an overnight stay really necessary?”

Today, we will answer those questions based on published research and real clinical experience.

Doesn't it hurt a lot?
How many days does the pain last?

For those considering breast augmentation, the biggest worry is usually 'pain.'
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, not local anesthesia. It therefore needs a somewhat longer recovery period than a simple procedure.
In most cases, the pain resolves within about a week.
Below, drawing on 20 years of research devoted to breast surgery, we will walk you through the published data.
( If you find video easier than text, please see the video below. )
Here is the first study.
Source

It was published in Canada in 2023,
and reports the findings of a study on 'pain trajectories and analgesic prescribing patterns in breast surgery patients.'
Pain levels (on a 0-10 scale) were measured in 56 patients for 7 days, starting immediately after surgery.
The results were as follows.

( * The red line on the graph indicates pain intensity. )
- Day of surgery: average 7 points
- Day 3 after surgery: down to 4 points or below
- Day 7 after surgery: most patients had stopped taking painkillers
In other words, you can see that pain eases sharply within an average of 5-7 days.
Here is the second study.

This is a 2008 U.S. study that 'investigated post-operative pain control in breast augmentation patients.'
It followed 50 patients,
and found that pain decreased markedly from day 5 after surgery.
Based on these two studies, we have given you the one-week timeframe.
Medical technology has advanced further since then,
so many patients today experience less pain than in the past.

Setting our clinic aside, looking at everyone who has had breast augmentation, on average patients find daily activities difficult on the day of surgery and the following day.
Of course, this varies from person to person — some patients go home on the day of surgery saying they feel no pain at all.
2. When can you return to daily life after surgery? (About the recovery period)
Source
Many people ask when they can return to daily life after breast augmentation.
It varies from person to person, but we have summarized the average recovery timeline in a table.
Stage
Timing (average)
Condition · possible activities
Stage 1: Early pain phase
Days 0-3
Pressure, swelling, tightness ↑; light walking possible
Stage 2: Stabilization
Days 4-7
Pain drops sharply; light outings and showering possible (as instructed)
Stage 3: Return to daily life
Around 2 weeks
Driving and light work resume; regular bra wear begins in earnest
Stage 4: Adjustment
Weeks 3-6
Stretching and light cardio resume; some discomfort remains
Stage 5: Feel and shape stabilize
3-6 months
Capsule stabilization progresses; the feel gradually softens
( ※ The schedule above is an average course. It varies considerably with submuscular placement, tight skin, smoking and drinking habits, occupational activity levels, and more. )
We have covered this in more detail in a video. The video below should be very helpful.
That covers pain and the recovery period after breast augmentation.
Finally, there is something we truly want to tell you.
'Returning to daily life' matters, of course,
but 'aftercare' matters just as much.

The breast is an area whose shape inevitably changes.
Just as breasts gradually spread and sag with age,
an implant does not simply stay as placed — gravity can still change the shape of the breast.
So when choosing a clinic, please make sure it has a well-established aftercare system.
To manage the postural changes caused by implant weight after breast surgery,
we operate Pilates, manual therapy, and physical therapy care rooms

Breast screening becomes harder once implants are in place
-> so we built a system that handles it entirely in-house.
