Apgujeong Breast Surgery Clinics: The Misconception That the Surgeon's Reviews Are All You Need
Hello — we are U&U Plastic Surgery, and we performed 3023 breast augmentation procedures last year.

This article was not written simply to promote our clinic.
It was written to share cautions with those who choose a clinic based on reviews of a particular surgeon found on communities such as the Yeouya cafe.
Of course, the operating surgeon's skill matters greatly.
However, breast augmentation complications
are not determined solely by
the surgeon's operative skill.

Below, we explain what to look at besides the operating surgeon when evaluating an Apgujeong breast surgery clinic.
It is written from 20 years of research experience, so please read closely.
1. Does the clinic operate
on the breast only, and nothing else?

The best-known complication of breast augmentation is 'capsular contracture.'
Why is that?
Because implant surgery carries a distinctly higher risk of infection than other cosmetic procedures.

Infection during surgery does not arise only from a lack of surgeon skill.
The environment in which the surgery takes place is also a factor that raises infection risk.
It is especially risky for breast surgery patients when facial surgery is performed on the same floor.
The face carries resident flora — bacteria that can travel through the air. Even if face and breast surgeries take place in different operating rooms, bacteria can ride the air into the room next door.
For this reason, Seoul National University Hospital strictly isolates its operating rooms by department.
But ordinary plastic surgery clinics are not as large as university hospitals, so it is hard to keep operating rooms far enough apart to truly isolate them.
That is why, when choosing a clinic in the first place, we suggest checking whether it operates on anything other than the breast.

Breast augmentation almost always requires general anesthesia.
That means a breast surgery clinic must have a board-certified anesthesiologist.
There are two main forms in which an anesthesiologist can be present at a plastic surgery clinic:
1) Freelance anesthesiologist
- travels between clinics, performing anesthesia only
2) Full-time, in-house anesthesiologist
- based at the clinic and dedicated to its surgeries
A full-time anesthesiologist is based at a single clinic, which makes possible a structure where patient safety is covered 24 hours a day.
So rather than a freelancer, it is worth checking whether the anesthesiologist is 'full-time in-house.'
( maintaining a 1:1 ratio of plastic surgeons to anesthesiologists )

There is one more type of in-house specialist to check for:
a board-certified breast surgeon.
Among the examinations performed before and after surgery is the 'ultrasound exam.'
But the following two are different in nature:
- an ultrasound read by a breast surgeon
- an ultrasound read by a plastic surgeon
Plastic surgeons tend to focus more on the implant during an ultrasound exam, while breast surgeons tend to concentrate more on the breast tissue.
That is why collaboration with a breast surgeon is sometimes needed — for first surgeries, and certainly for revision surgery.
In post-operative checkups too, medical staff who have mainly examined breasts with implants are more helpful to the patient.

We answered questions about complications, as well as questions from those weighing important life stages such as childbirth and pregnancy.

U&U Plastic Surgery currently keeps to a principle of 3 surgeries / 6 consultations per surgeon per day.
Still, hoping to help those interested in breast augmentation, we share a selection of the most frequently asked questions from the Q&A.
