First of all, implant surgery cannot improve the situation of every pectus carinatum patient.

In particular, when the sternal protrusion is 2.5~3cm or more, implants alone may not be enough to improve it.

Below are the common traits of those who can benefit from implant surgery.

- Mild cases, with sternal protrusion of 1~2cm or less

- Symmetrical protrusion of the left and right chest wall

- Sufficient skin and soft tissue

- No functional problems such as respiratory or cardiac compression

Even if I meet the conditions above,

in the long run,

won't the implants drift apart

or end up looking spread out?

since my breastbone still protrudes,

I worry the shape will eventually turn strange.

That is an entirely understandable concern.

However, the shape of the chest wall is not the only factor that affects cleavage.

- An implant placed under the chest muscle

- Adequate skin and fat tissue on the inner side of the cleavage

- The process of creating the implant pocket during surgery

These factors also influence how the cleavage gathers toward the center.

As the gif above shows, creating the implant pocket toward the inner breast also matters. Adding fat grafting to the inner side can create an environment that maintains the cleavage.

This information comes from published research, so please stay with us.

This paper investigated whether people with protruding or sunken breastbones can also achieve good results from augmentation.

To that end, it studied 132 people with pectus carinatum or pectus excavatum.

All of them underwent implant surgery, and the results were followed for an average of 16 months.

The survey found an overall satisfaction score of 9.13 out of 10.

As for breast shape relative to chest wall shape — the biggest worry — respondents reported it looked natural and symmetrical.

No cases of implants drifting apart were reported either.
