How Long Should You Wear a Bra After Breast Augmentation? — Advice from a Clinic That Even Develops Its Own Upper Band

it seems like it would feel so restrictive..

the compression bra and the upper band?

The role of the compression bra is 'to hold the implant in place so the inframammary fold can set.'
In other words, the wearing period is determined by how well the fold is expected to set, along with implant fixation.
For firm fixation, some patients end up wearing the compression bra and upper band for about 1-2 months.
At U&U, however, we recommend wearing the upper band and compression bra for only about 1 week.
Isn't wearing it for just 1 week
too short..?

Some of you may be thinking exactly that.
But if the surgery went well from the start, the compression garments actually play only a minor role.
Breast augmentation is a surgery that creates a 'pocket' to hold the implant.
Here, the inframammary fold is like a structure of fascial tissue beneath the skin that supports the breast from below.
In other words, if the fascia is preserved or fixed so the fold holds while the 'pocket' is being created, the fold will not collapse.
So whether the fold sets well is largely determined during the surgery itself.
Maintaining the fold with a compression bra is only a 'supporting role' — which is why 1 week is enough.
Next, let us talk about the upper band.
There are 2 main reasons for using an upper band:
- to bring the breasts together for cleavage
- to help the implant settle downward
Some of you may wonder about using a band 'to help the implant settle downward.'
After breast augmentation, the upper breast tends to look bulgy for the first 1-3 months.
This happens because the implant is in, but the skin and tissue covering it have not yet stretched.
The less existing skin and tissue you have, the more pronounced this upper-bulge tends to be.
In that situation, the band is used to help the implant settle into a lower position.
In our case, we recommend wearing post-surgery garments in the following order:
1. The upper band worn immediately after surgery (*UU Band)
: removed around day 2
2. Compression bra (*UU Fix)
: worn only until around 1 week
3. Sports bra (*UU Fit)
There is a reason we develop and control these in-house.
With off-the-shelf compression bras, the part that firmly supports the breast shape often does not match the implant's contour.
Implant diameters generally range from 10-14cm — not a small difference. Yet the under-support of ready-made products is often designed identically despite this variation.
As a result, it is easy to find patients who feel constricted or in pain in a post-surgery bra.
To resolve this discomfort, we developed the UU Bra ourselves.
