Breast Surgery and Breastfeeding: Any Problems? Won't the Implant Weight Leave My Breasts Sagging by the Time I Finish Nursing?
- Whether breastfeeding is possible after surgery
- Whether the weight of implants will cause sagging after breastfeeding
- Whether implant check-ups after surgery pose any risk to the baby in the womb
Here is a summary from a clinic that performed over 3,000 breast surgeries last year.
Hello — we are U&U Plastic Surgery, the clinic that performed 3,023 breast surgeries last year.

I'm thinking about getting breast surgery,
but I also plan to have a baby later.
If I have breast implants,
will breastfeeding become harder,
or could other problems come up?
I'm wondering if I should just wait
and look into surgery after having a child..

First of all, the breast augmentation methods mainly used today have almost no effect on breastfeeding.
Implants are not placed anywhere near the mammary gland tissue.
Beneath the mammary glands lies a thick muscle called the pectoralis major, and the implant is positioned under its fascia or under the muscle itself.
In other words, given where the implant sits, the milk ducts and mammary glands that produce breast milk are simply not affected.
Of course, if a periareolar incision is used to place the implant, there can be some impact.
However, these days implants are mostly placed through an armpit or inframammary fold incision, so you can consider it largely a non-issue.

That said, there is something we would like to tell you.
Even if you can breastfeed,
the shape of your breasts
can change quite a bit.

During pregnancy and nursing, hormones such as estrogen and prolactin make the breasts repeatedly enlarge and shrink.
In the process, the ligaments and skin supporting the breasts become stretched.
And skin and ligaments stretched this way do not fully bounce back after childbirth and nursing.

Then if my breasts, with implants in place,
keep enlarging and shrinking,
won't the weight of the implants
make them sag even more?
Breast surgery and breastfeeding
It is hard to say this is 'always the case.'
It is true that the weight of an implant adds load on the skin and ligaments, which can cause more sagging.
At the same time, however, the implant sometimes supports the volume and actually helps prevent sagging.
In other words, what matters more than having an implant is your skin elasticity and how much your breast size changes during pregnancy and nursing.
After the surgery,
I'll need regular check-ups
to monitor the implants..
Is there anything in the implant check-up process
that could be dangerous for the baby?

The most common examination in implant check-ups is the 'ultrasound scan.'
Because it uses 'sound waves' rather than radiation, it poses no danger to pregnant women or the fetus.

Ultrasound examination
It is not common, but occasionally an 'MRI scan' is performed alongside the ultrasound.
MRI does not use radiation either, but the 'contrast agent' can be a concern for the fetus.
(*Contrast agent: a drug injected into a blood vessel during an MRI scan)
So if an MRI scan is truly necessary, it is done without a contrast agent.
In most cases, though, an ultrasound alone is enough for the check-up, so there is no need to worry too much.
