Some of you may have had breast surgery three, five, or more years ago.

That may have left you in a situation where it is hard to return to the hospital where you originally had surgery.

Before deciding on revision or removal, you are probably planning to get an MRI and an ultrasound exam first.

'Let Me In,' the TV program I appeared on as a breast surgery specialist over a decade ago

I have spent 20 years researching breast surgery alone.

Here, I would like to answer the questions patients have asked most often about implant rupture.

- Ruptured breast implant: MRI or ultrasound for a detailed exam?

- Only one side ruptured — do both sides need revision surgery?

I hope the information below helps those spending anxious days over a ruptured implant.

MRI or ultrasound for a detailed exam?

Most people asking this question already know an MRI can detect a rupture and want to know whether an ultrasound can as well.

To give you the conclusion first: implant rupture can also be diagnosed with ultrasound.

Diagnosis is possible when the doctor has the skill to confirm on ultrasound the findings seen on MRI.

As you can see, the images shown during an MRI and an ultrasound exam are different.

That is why an implant ultrasound should be performed by a doctor with substantial accumulated experience with implants.

Ultrasound examination

The ultrasound image above contains a variety of information, as follows.

- Rupture diagnosis

- Implant placement location

- Implant type

- Capsular contracture diagnosis, and more

Without sufficient ultrasound experience, however, it is difficult to read that information from the image.

There are also cases where a rupture is hard to diagnose clearly on ultrasound.

- When only a small amount of silicone has leaked from the rupture

- When the rupture occurred on the side or back of the implant

Even these situations, tricky to diagnose on ultrasound, can ultimately be identified only with ample experience.

That is why I recommend having your condition checked at a hospital that has a breast surgery department alongside plastic surgery.

Only one side ruptured —

do both sides need revision surgery?

Source

Revising only one side is entirely possible.

If you replace it with an implant of the same manufacturer and type as the existing one, there is a good chance both sides will show little difference in feel and shape.

If you switch to an implant from a different manufacturer or of a different type, however, the situation changes.

In that case, a slight difference in feel or shape between the two sides may occur, so caution is needed.
