Hello, this is U&U Plastic Surgery.
〈 A record of over 20 years devoted solely to breast surgery research 〉

2000s - listed as an author of breast surgery papers in the Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons

Before writing this post, I had uploaded a column on whether breastfeeding is possible after breast augmentation / reduction / lift surgery.
Looking at augmentation alone, I explained that in most cases breastfeeding is not a problem.
However, I also noted that if the surgery is performed through a periareolar incision, the nerves leading to the nipple can be damaged.
( * For details, please refer to the column below.)

Fortunately, breast augmentation today is almost always performed through an armpit or inframammary fold incision.
In other words, we can say there are almost no aftereffects that make breastfeeding difficult.

Still, you may worry that your milk supply could change.
Breast milk is produced in the mammary gland tissue, and it comes out through passages called milk ducts.
But if your surgery uses an inframammary fold or armpit incision, the mammary gland tissue and milk ducts are never touched.

Even before breast surgery, some women naturally have a small amount of mammary gland tissue.
In that case, milk supply after childbirth can be low regardless of the surgery.
So if you are planning augmentation surgery, I recommend getting screened in advance for your mammary gland volume and any other breast conditions.
( * Note : milk ducts develop mainly during pregnancy / after childbirth, so they are difficult to assess by screening before pregnancy. )

be too dangerous..?

It differs slightly depending on which implant is used.
With smooth-type implants, receiving lactation massage the same way as any other mother does not cause major problems.
That is because the implant surface is smooth and does not adhere to the breast tissue.
Textured-type implants, however, are a little different.
If lactation massage is done incorrectly, the breast tissue and the implant can come apart from each other.
Their surface is made rough so they grip the breast tissue firmly — meaning that pressing too hard can cause problems with the implant.

As you can see, how you breastfeed changes depending on which implant is used.
So when considering a breast surgery clinic, please also check whether that clinic can perform breast screening / ultrasound exams.
I recommend choosing a place where you can consult not only the plastic surgeon who placed your implants, but also a breast surgery specialist.

For those looking into breastfeeding after breast surgery, that is everything I have prepared.
As mentioned earlier, breast surgery poses little hindrance to breastfeeding.
However, during breastfeeding,
the breasts can sag and change shape.
Also, due to hormonal changes,
as the breasts repeatedly enlarge and shrink,
sagging commonly occurs.
