Preservé Breast Augmentation - Surgical Process / Side Effects? Advice Based on Two Papers.
Hello. We are U&U Plastic Surgery, a clinic devoted exclusively to breast surgery.

Before writing this article, we published an introductory post about the Preservé procedure.
Average operation time of 20~40 minutes / no general anesthesia required / a scar of around 2.5cm~3.5cm, and so on..
We summarized the advantages of this technique and the cases it can be applied to.
( * If today is the first time you have seen the word Preservé, please read the article below first. )

Today we would like to talk about the safety of the Preservé procedure.
This technique was introduced in the first half of this year. That means it is still hard for patients to find reviews to refer to.
So we are going to examine in detail whether this technique is truly safe - based on the surgical process.

U&U Plastic Surgery's research on breast augmentation continues.
Is Preservé breast augmentation safe?
Let's look at the surgical process.
Source
We have prepared three short video clips.
This is the process of the implant entering the breast through the Preservé procedure.
The space for the implant is widened by pushing the tissue outward - and the implant goes in.
The space for the implant is created with the instrument below.
A balloon is placed in this instrument, and by inflating the balloon inside the breast, the space for the implant is created.
As shown below, the implant pocket is secured by inflating a balloon.
There are two benefits gained from this process.
- During surgery, the surgeon's hands make less direct contact with the patient's breast.
- When creating the implant pocket, no damage is caused by directly cutting muscles, blood vessels, and so on.
In other words, it is an approach designed around tissue preservation, which also shortens the recovery period.
Creating the pocket with a balloon.
It sounds unfamiliar - is it really a sound method..?
They say it is safe, but
it has not been in use for very long anyway,
so I feel a bit uneasy..
Source
Using a balloon to create surgical space is not unique to Preservé.
Breast surgery / obstetrics and gynecology / thoracic surgery, and more.. it has long been used in medicine to prevent tissue damage.
Below is a paper published in 1998 that covers balloon-assisted surgical techniques.

It deals with creating a surgical space with a balloon, just as the implant pocket is created in breast augmentation.
In other words, even 27 years ago,
balloon-assisted surgical techniques
were already being studied.
Source
That study also showed that balloon-assisted techniques can be applied safely in surgery.
So we would like to tell you that there is no need to worry too much about the Preservé technique.
Is Preservé breast augmentation safe?
This time, let's look at the implant.

The implant that can be used with this technique is the Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix implant. * Motiva Smoothsilk Ergonomix
This is because few implants are suited to the Preservé approach, including the use of a balloon.
Therefore, we will discuss its safety by showing you the research data on this Motiva implant.

This is a clinical study analyzing real-world data from 1,053 surgeries performed with Motiva implants.
It is a long-term study with 6 years of follow-up, analyzing postoperative complications / side effects / reoperation rates.
It reports a low complication rate both in primary surgeries and in patients who underwent revision surgery.
In particular, issues such as capsular contracture / implant rupture were reported to be rarely observed.
Therefore, this study can serve as evidence supporting the safety of the Motiva implants used in the Preservé procedure.

Presentation at the Breast Plastic Surgery Research Society

Participation in the 2024 Seoul National University symposium
So far, we have examined safety from two angles.
- The Preservé 'surgical technique'
- The 'implant' used in Preservé
With its safety explained both directly and indirectly, it seems that many people are still seeking this procedure.
Finally, we attach the record of U&U participating in a live Preservé surgery at the official invitation of Motiva headquarters.
We hope this brings at least a little peace of mind to those who feel anxious about a 'new' technique.
