You may be reading this as a woman in her 20s, or as someone newly married who plans to have a child within the next 2–3 years.

Because of my insecurities about my chest,

I have been thinking about surgery for a long time.

I do not have children yet,

but I am not ruling out having them either,

so I keep hesitating about the surgery..

Breastfeeding after breast surgery —

is it really okay?

Source

This post is for those of you with concerns like the ones above.

That said, there are several types of breast surgery.

- Augmentation

- Reduction

- Lift ( a procedure that raises sagging breasts )

For each of these 3 procedures, I will explain whether breastfeeding is possible.

This advice is based on 20 years of research experience, so please read it closely.

Breast augmentation

Source

To start with the conclusion: breastfeeding is possible after augmentation.

The reason lies in where the implant sits inside the breast.

Breast implants are usually placed in a layer much deeper than the mammary gland tissue.

In other words, the implant never comes into contact with the mammary gland tissue or the milk ducts.

( * Mammary gland tissue: the part that produces breast milk )

( * Milk ducts: the passages breast milk travels through )

So whether you go larger or smaller with the implant, breastfeeding is possible regardless of size.

However, there is one thing to watch out for.

Source

It is the incision site.

To place an implant, an incision has to be made somewhere, and the implant goes in through that opening.

There are 4 main incision sites to consider.

- Inframammary fold

- Armpit

- Areola

- Navel ( * the navel is rarely used these days. )

Of these, the areolar incision can be somewhat risky when it comes to breastfeeding.

This is because, while the implant is being inserted through an areolar incision, the mammary gland tissue and the sensory nerves running to the nipple can be damaged.

For that reason, I would recommend having the surgery through an armpit or inframammary fold incision.

I have seen an article saying that implant material

was found in breast milk.

Does that really happen..?

For those with this concern, I am attaching a column.

Reduction

Breast surgery and breastfeeding

Breastfeeding after a reduction cannot, in truth, be called 100% safe.

This is because during a reduction, the passages that carry milk (the milk ducts) are unavoidably damaged.

That said, the mammary gland tissue is not completely removed.

( * Mammary gland tissue: where breast milk is produced )

But since some damage to the milk ducts is unavoidable, problems with breastfeeding are possible.

Lift

Breast surgery and breastfeeding

Breast lifts fall into 2 types.

- A lift with implants (augmentation lift)

- A lift combined with reduction

As mentioned above, an augmentation lift with implants usually poses no major problem for breastfeeding.

But if a reduction is added, breastfeeding may be affected.

To those considering augmentation,

one last piece of advice.

Some of you may already have had consultations for augmentation.

But I imagine some of you keep searching for information, wondering whether you can really trust the assurance that breastfeeding will be fine..

The thought that a single decision

could affect your child's health.

As a mother, it is perhaps only natural to be skeptical of clinics.

But there is 1 reassuring fact.

It is that the current trend in breast surgery

is moving more and more toward preserving your own tissue.
